I love discovering new smaller brands and The Oblong Box Shop is one that has really taken off recently. They have a range of skirts that are fun and unique and help them (and whoever’s wearing their skirts!) stand out in a crowd!
When I visited The Oblong Box Shop booth at Viva Las Vegas, the owner Denialle very kindly gave me the Puffer Fish Skirt in my size! Now I’m not one for novelty prints but this one had me smitten. If I am going to have animals or quirky characters on my skirt then I prefer it to be more on the border like this skirt or like the Dancing Horses Jenny Skirt by Pinup Girl Clothing.
I was so in love with this skirt that I got changed into it later in the day and paired it with this Fables By Barrie Bustier that I’d also purchased that day.
The beauty of this skirt is that it has so many different colours in it that you could choose to highlight. I love it with this aqua colour but also have worn it with purple, lavender and kelly green.
I think the boldness and variety of colours is what really drew me to this skirt. Sure, the puffer fish are cute but that wasn’t what initially got me excited about it. My husband was surprised that it took my fancy as he knows I’m not usually one for prints like this. But it’s just so damn adorable the the pop of colours are so bold- and I’m a sucker for colour!
The Oblong Box Shop have a number of novelty prints in their collection and all of them are 100% Polyester and retail for US$96. Now, I’ve had several ladies asking about the quality of the skirt since the price was definitely at the higher end of the scale for a polyester skirt. Granted, I didn’t buy this skirt myself but if Denialle hadn’t given it to me, I would have bought it anyway.
Whilst the material isn’t as nice as if it was cotton, it’s still a very well made skirt and the main selling point is the uniqueness of the prints. If they were standard solid coloured polyester skirts for the same price, and you could get a cotton version easily somewhere else, then it wouldn’t be worth the money. But these skirts are unlike anything else on the market and the designs were hand drawn by Denialle.
The benefit of having the skirt a polyester material instead of cotton is that there is no issue with wrinkling! I found it wonderful to travel in and wore it several times on our overseas trip.
These skirts have 4 yards of fabric gathered onto a fitted waistband and are 26″ in length. I think they definitely suit a petticoat underneath as otherwise they hang a little flat- In these photos I am wearing my black petticoat from That Shop but have also worn my Samantha Petticoat from Malco Modes which fits underneath well.
The waist band has no stretch to it BUT there is a 1″ overhang in the button closure so you can move the button if need be. I wear a size small and it fits very snug- for reference, I am between a 27″-28″ waist (lower end if I’m wearing the Rago Longline Bra) and the size small caters for a 26″-27″ waist according to the size chart.
The zip is on the side and there is a hidden pocket on the other side. Personally I would have preferred the zip at the back and two pockets but that’s because I like symmetry!
The Novelty Print Skirts come in sizes small to 3XL, catering up to a waist size of 40″-41″. Join up to The Oblong Box Shop Fan Club to receive a 10% off discount and 30% off each month for selected items!
Thank you to Elizabeth J Photography for the wonderful photos! The Fables by Barrie Bustier will be featured on the blog in the coming weeks too so stay tuned!
