When I got back from Oslo at the start of February, poor Matt was feeling a little left out that he’d been stuck at home! With our next holiday not planned until mid-April (VEGGGASSS), I suggested we do a weekend away at the start of March!
Since we also needed to be careful with our spending with other holidays already booked, I looked into which European cities were the cheapest for accommodation and costs like food. Riga was a top contender BUT I was really pining for some warmer weather and sunshine so we settled on Lisbon in Portugal.
Initially, I’d only booked us to fly in on the Friday morning and leave on Monday morning. However, as it got closer to the time, the weather forecast was definitely NOT warm and sunny on those days, but vastly improving for the week following. So I decided to change our flight home to Tuesday evening so we had time to enjoy the forecasted sunshine on Monday and Tuesday.
It was a great decision as it also made the whole trip less rushed and the weather on Tuesday was exceptional. We sat by the beach for a couple of hours just enjoying having the sun on us and watching the world go by.
Lisbon definitely was a great budget option, we opted for a Air BnB place and kept costs down by eating as from street food stalls and local bakeries. We did go to a restaurant one night but it was a complete rip-off for the food we received – unfortunately I think we had unknowingly been in a very touristy area.
Lisbon was a beautiful city with lots of history and rather run-down in some places. But the people were friendly and there was lots to explore. We particularly enjoyed our days in Belem and Sintra- I highly recommend making the time to visit both areas if you can!
I’ve created another highlights video from our time there, hope you enjoy it!
