It’s no secret that I have a love for swing dresses, and what’s better than a swing dress? A STRETCH swing dress!
Stop Staring use their stretch millennium fabric for a variety of their dress styles, both swing and wiggle. I own a simple but elegant plain black Stop Staring Dress in the same kind of fabric and it’s such a great go-to dress for a dinner out. There’s ample room to fill your belly with as many treats and delicacies as your heart desires without feeling uncomfortable and restricted by the end of the night.
As such, I was excited to see that their upcoming season features more swing dresses in their stretch millennium and think this Summer Swing Dress in Navy with Red Dots is so effortlessly chic.
I love a dress with a bit of versatility and think that this dress could easily be thrown on during a summer day but also be perfect for a dinner basking in the evening sun.
The cut of the dress has a subtle sweetheart bodice with spaghetti straps and soft gathered skirt. There’s more than enough room to fit a petticoat underneath this skirt however I decided to go without for this shoot to create a slightly more classic shape instead of typically 50s. The one thing I would have loved in this dress was just a teennny bit more length. As it is, it hits me at my knees (I’m about 169cm) and my ideal dress length is more below the knee – so a extra 3″ or so would have been perfect.
I’m wearing a size small which fits really well given the stretch. In some other Stop Staring dresses I’ve tried over the years, I’ve definitely been more of a size medium if there isn’t any stretch. But for this. the size small is perfect for that formed and fitted feel while not feeling like a stuffed sausage! For reference, according to the size chart, my 36-37″ Bust (depending on my bra) puts me in the medium size and my 27″ waist between a small and medium. So I think sizing is pretty spot on, that I can size down in stretch items and stay a medium for non-stretch.
As with ordering anything online, always compare your current measurements against that of the size chart and if in doubt, contact customer service who should be able to shed light on what size will be best for you.
Due to the spaghetti straps on this dress, wearing a strapless bra is a must if you don’t want the bra straps showing. I love wearing my Rago 2202 Longline Bra and so in situations like this where it’s not going to work with the straps, I actually convert it into a strapless bustier (see my post about it here). For this, you still need a decent strapless bra and I’ve recently discovered this Curvy Kate Bra which made me realise just how bad my old strapless bra really was!
Because I love a bit of classic Navy and Red styling, I carried on the colours in the dress through to my accessories.
The Summer Swing Dress in Navy and Red Dot is being released in October and retail for US$165, going up to a size 18. If you can’t wait until then, there are still plenty of swing dresses on the Stop Staring website including the Summer Swing Dress in a Solid Red.
Thank you so much to Nicole Engelmann Photography for these gorgeous fresh photos and my friend Rhina for showing us around Kew Gardens. We were there right at the beginning of spring when everything was starting to bloom and it was absolutely gorgeous – albeit a little chilly!
