When I go into a vintage store, sometimes I get completely overwhelmed by the volume of clothing all smashed together in a sometimes not-so-orderly fashion. So typically, my favourite things to look at are those that are usually displayed better- gloves, jewellery and HATS.
Vintage hats and fascinators from the 40s and 50s are a bit of a weakness of mine and if I had more storage, I know my collection would be far bigger than it is currently. Back in the day, a hat was a essential accessory to complete a woman’s outfit and so I find that when I’m really wanting to channel that authentic vintage look, a hat is a must-have.
I can be a little picky about the style of hat that I wear and I typically prefer something that compliments my hairstyle – not completely covering it up. And I’ve also not really found anyone who did good, authentic reproduction that genuinely looked true vintage… that is until I discovered Vintage Dames.
Based in the Bahamas, Vintage Dames owner and creator Reagan has incredible eye for detail and possesses true millinery talent. Vintage Dames has both reproduction creations and refurbished true vintage pieces but most of the time it’s impossible to tell the difference between thanks to Reagan taking inspiration from the classic detailing of decades gone by.
When Reagan contacted me about trying one of her beautiful hats, needless to say I jumped at the chance. But how to choose? I wanted something versatile but with a little bit of glamour so after drooling over all the options on the Vintage Dames website, I settled on the Velvet Pleated Calot Half Hat.
I adore not only the velvet but also the beautiful pleat detailing that reminds me a lot of a true vintage hat I own. The beauty of Vintage Dames is custom orders are more than welcome so you can choose different colours or add little details as desired. I had seen the honeycomb beaded veil on a different hat and asked Reagan if it could be added to my chosen style.
The finished product came lovingly packaged in a hat box with a accompanying wax sealed and beautifully presented information sheet. You really can feel Reagan’s passion in every element!
As I’d mentioned before, I prefer hats that compliment the hair, and not cover it up completely. So I prefer to position the Velvet Pleated Calot Half Hat towards the back of my head but it can easily be worn further forward also. You are also able to gently bend the hat to shape your head perfectly – I needed to push the sides in just a fraction so it sat nice and snug.
Weather you need a custom creation to suit a upcoming special occasion or simply wish to add a few more hats to your collection, I can’t think of anyone better than Vintage Dames to get that authentic vintage feel.
Thank you so much to Elizabeth J Photography for these pictures taken in New Zealand when I was back visiting in November!
