Dermalogica Pre-Clense

I’ve never been the one to fiddle around with makeup remover and find makeup wipes both expensive and harsh around my eyes. I don’t wear any waterproof makeup so have found that I’ve been able to just use a cleanser to remove everything at the end of the day.

Not all cleansers work well though, some just smudge everything around and it’s hard to feel completely fresh-faced. My go-to cleanser for cleaning off all my makeup is Antipdoes Juliet Cleanser and I do a double wash- one to remove the majority of the makeup and another to really cleanse.

When the Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse arrived in my letterbox along with a few of their other products in a PR package, I was intrigued with the idea. It all made sense- a oil based cleanser to really remove makeup and dirt from the skin and then you could go on to use your regular cleanser.

I tried it out that night and was really happy with the results! With a little bit of gentle rubbing, it got all my makeup off and I could then use any of the cleansers in my arsenal- I wasn’t just limited to one like usual.

It’s quite a runny liquid that comes in a pump bottle. You use it by applying it to your dry face and gentlly massaging it to dissolve everything that is sitting on your skin. You then wet your hands, continue massaging and rinse. Personally, I would like the product to be a little less runny as I feel like there is a risk of half of it running off my hands before I can apply it to my face. However, I do love that it’s a pump bottle!

Now since I don’t use much heavy duty waterproof makeup, I thought I’d put Pre-Cleanse to the test against Benefit Cosmetics ‘They’re Real Push Up Liner’. This gel liner is notoriously hard to remove, so much so that Benefit even created their own ‘They’re Real’ remover. I drew a thick line and massaged Pre-Cleanse into the product for a good 20 seconds or so before adding water and finally rinsing. Pre-Cleanse definitely removed it well although it took a bit of work!

Pre-Cleanse contains Olive, Kukai and Apricot Oil and has a delicious smell. Dermalogica don’t use any artificial colours or scents so their products are great for those with sensitive skin. Pre-Cleanse is the perfect alternative for those of you, who like me, find makeup removers just too harsh.

I know oil-based cleansers can seem scary if you have oil-prone skin but trust me, it will not make your skin oilier! If your skin produces too much oil, it may be because you are using a cleanser that is stripping your natural oils so your skin is over-compensating.

Dermalogica Pre-Cleanse is NZ$66 for the 150ml bottle and you can order online. Dermalogica is a international brand and is even available on

  1. Thanks for mentioning the oily skin issue! I wish I had known that a few years ago when I had super oily skin so avoided anything moisturising – it was because my skin was too dry and the pores went into overdrive, what a paradox!
