Have you got a gorgeous pinup obsessed lady in your life? Perhaps she’s your girlfriend/wife, best friend or co-worker? Want to find the perfect present for her this Christmas but unsure what to buy? Well here’s a handy dandy buying guide, grouped together in various price brackets to suit your budget! Remember to allow postage times if you are buying from overseas, Christmas is only just over a month away after all!
A lot of ladies in the Pinup/Vintage scene LOVE the idea of having a professional photoshoot done. Even if your pinup has done one before, I’m sure she would love to do another… it’s such a confidence boost and we get to show off our pretty clothes! Search for local photographers in your area that might have done pinup shoots before- they don’t necessarily need to be specialists in the style. You could also search through what photographers pages she ‘likes’ on Facebook and see if there are any that are in your city.
Prices for shoots vary, but expect the starting price to probably be around $300 and go up to nearly $1000 depending on the photographer. Try to look for deals that include a set amount of prints so you don’t have to purchase them extra.
If the Pinup you are buying for is more of the adventurous type, why not get her a vintage bike? With a cute wee basket on the front, these Reid bikes are bound to win her heart. This style is AU$249 on reidcycles.com.au and you can find a stockist for your country here. Or, scour your local trade/sell website for genuine vintage bikes and you might just find a bargain!
One thing for sure, pinup girls LOVE to shop! So instead of giving her one more thing to clutter her wardrobe, why not treat her to the opportunity to get dressed up… that’s definitely a favourite past-time for us!
Book yourselves into a nice hotel and take her out to dinner. Bonus points if the hotel/restaurant have a vintage vibe but that of course all depends on the city you live in.
My pick for those of you in my hometown of Auckland, would be of course Hotel DeBrett. The art deco bar and mid-century furniture is to die for and the restaurant never fails to impress.
Rooms start at NZ$330.
A swing skirt will always be a welcome addition to any pinup girls wardrobe and the Jenny Skirt (US$98) by Pinup Girl Clothing comes in a variety of fun prints and a few solid colours. If you are unsure of sizing, try to measure any other skirts in her wardrobe or waist belts and compare against the measurements listed on the size chart.
If you are worried about picking a print that she won’t like, go with the solid black or the red taffeta.
Now I know this idea will seem super boring but a few years ago my husband got me a clothes steamer for Christmas and it’s been one of the best presents ever! Sure, it’s not quite as exciting as everything else in this post but the practicality of not having to get out the iron/ironing board everyday for those huge swing skirts is wonderful.
Steamers can range in price but you should be able to find a middle-range one for around $100-$150, maybe even less.
Why not put together a pinup care package, full of fun things that any lady will love looking through to discover all the various goodies. So that you don’t have to order from multiple websites, I’ve compiled a list from Pinup Girl Clothing since they offer such a great array of gifts! For bonus points, add in some lovely smelling bath and skincare items from LUSH and her favourite chocolate.
Fill a SunJellies Bag (US$22) with…
Zombettie Liquid Lipstick – US$12
Vintage Style Sheer Hair Scarf– US$23
Luxulite Glitter Brooch and Earrings Set– US$48
Vintage Hairstyling Book– US$36.95
Diamonds might be a girls best friend, but a little stirling silver in quirky designs never disappoints either. Femme Metale has a adorable, spunky and retro inspired range of high quality jewellery including this anchor charm necklace for US$75.
The B.A.I.T Footwear Ida shoes are a fast favourite amongst pinup girls! With a vast array of colours available, there bound to be one that suits your lady. Look at the other shoes in her wardrobe to find her shoe size and then convert, but bearing in mind that this style runs tight so get a half size up from her usual.
The Ida is US$67.
Every glamorous night-time outfit needs a shiny black purse to match and I think the “Who’s the Gloss?” bag from ModCloth is perfect for the job!
Makeup is always a safe option for any woman! Benefit Cosmetics have some amazing Christmas packs and my favourite has to be “The Life of the Party” palette containing mini primer, blush, eyeshadows, mascara and face/lip tint all in one cute tin. For only US$36, this is great stocking filler or pressie for your bestie.
Have a browse through the 300+ designs on the Erstwilder website. A MEGA favourite amongst the modern pinup ladies, there’s bound to be something that will catch your eye and be perfect. If in doubt, pick out a brooch of her favourite animal, they are all so adorable like ‘Farrah the French Kitty’ Brooch for US$24
If your pinup girl is still new to dressing in the style, then likely she’ll be learning the ropes of vintage hair. The Sauvecita Hair Kit (US$27.99) contains a Pomade, Grooming Spray and Argan Silkening Serum- the essentials for a vintage roller set!
If this all feels too overwhelming or you’ve left it a bit late for ordering, a gift voucher will ALWAYS be well received. Most online retailers will do them and it means your pinup can pick out exactly what she wants.
It’s the thought that counts anyway but hopefully this has given you some ideas! Personally, these days I’d rather just be taken out to a nice dinner or have a ‘experience’ with my husband rather than a item (*hint hint* Matt!).
