Vivien of Holloway was one of the first vintage reproduction websites for me to discover and it’s be so great watching their designs expand over the last few years. One of their most recent new releases is the Lana Dress and it had the 1940s loving part of me positively swooning!
The 1940s of course saw WWII and fabric supply was low meaning slimmer skirts and often women made use of old drapes or their husbands suits he no longer wore. As much as I adore a full circle skirt and petticoat, I also really love the polished look that a 1940s A-line skirt gives but there’s not all that much of it around in the vintage reproduction world.
The Lana Dress in Golden Rose is stunningly true to the era. Lightly padded shoulders, draping collar, A-line skirt and muted floral print- I knew that this print would look perfect with my new copper locks! When I put her on for the first time I instantly fell in love with the silhouette and fit.
One of my favourite features of this dress is the big drapey pockets. Not only do they give a awesome shape to the dress but they are wonderfully functional too and are quite deep.
Even though the skirt is a A-line shape, I was still worried about my large hips compared to my bust/waist since it’s a rather slim A-line. My bust measures 36″, waist 27″ and hips 42″ and with Vivien of Holloway swing dresses I can size down to the B34 W26 H36 size or size 12 (see my other VoH reviews here). However, with this dress I was sure I would at least have to go up to the next size or even two sizes larger. I was assured by staff that no, my usual size would be fine in my hips and indeed they were right.
The bust and the waist are a perfect fit and the hips are just right. The skirt just skims past my body without pulling across any areas that can sometimes cause problems like my upper thighs. The size bigger would have worked well too, it would have been a all over slightly looser look without being baggy.
I am totally in love with the Lana Dress and hope to see the range extended past the current 6 patterns. I would adore some solid colours or textured tweed type fabrics for Autumn. If you love the 1940s shapes then this dress would be the perfect addition to your wardrobe!
I loved that my 1940s style shoe from Miss L Fire not only suited the era of the dress but also matched the browns and golds of the print beautifully.
