I’d like to introduce you to a relatively new brand based in Singapore! Whilst Bluebelle has been around for a couple of years, up until recently they’ve only been stocking popular reproduction brands. Owner Ammy felt like there should be more Singapore based vintage reproduction brands to cater for the growing demand and in the last few months has released her own designs!
For her first collection, Ammy has created a range that’s summery, whimsical and just feels so feminine. When she asked if I’d like to pick one out to try, I went with the Summer Baby Blue and White Polka Dress. I’ve always loved various shades of blue but don’t seem to have that much of it in my wardrobe so knew it would be a great addition! Usually I steer clear of too much polka dots but this smaller print is subtle enough that I really love it.
The Summer Dress features a gathered bustline, spaghetti straps and a fully lined bodice and skirt. The cotton is lovely, it doesn’t feel too rough or cheap and the white lining underneath is a welcome touch for a light dress like this. It doesn’t wrinkle too easily which is always a plus in my book!
The skirt itself is gathered and full enough for me to fit my favourite Malco Modes Samantha Petticoat underneath.
The gathers on the bust are a little too shallow for my chest which seems to be typical of this style of dress (I’ve tried a few other brands with a similar shape). It doesn’t bother me too much as I find as long as I wear a padded bra, it doesn’t look too obvious. However, ideally I would have preferred adjustable straps to make fitting the bust a little easier and another inch or two of depth for the gathers.
In terms of sizing, based on my experience I would recommend that you size down. I’m about 36-37″ in the bust and 27″ in the waist and went with a size 12 which is listed as catering for a 35″ bust and 29″ waist. So, according to the size chart, it should have been quite fitted in the bust. However, I actually found it the opposite! It was really quite big and I had to get it taken in a couple of inches.
This advice is only based on my experience with this particular dress- if you are looking at another dress or are still unsure about what size you might need for this one, contact Ammy. She’s a real sweetheart and I’m sure will be more than willing to assist you with whatever you need.
Despite the small sizing issue, I do really love this dress for the quality, gorgeous colour and they way it makes me feel sophisticated but fun all at the same time.
The Summer Baby Blue and White Polka Dress is SGD$158 (approx US$117/ £87 / NZ$157) and comes in size 6-18.
A huge thank you to Nicole Engelmann Photography for not only shooting my first ever London based blog post but also helping to make my dream come true of getting to shoot in a Lavender field! Also a big thank you to her lovely friend Tamara who drove us to Mayfield Lavender Farm and gave me lots of tips on local vintage stuff!
