The Lucille Coat Dress by Evelyn Wood

Moving to the much colder climate of England, I’ve been conscious of the fact that I’m not quite equipped with the winter weather that will soon loom. I’ve been on the lookout for the last few months for anything warm that still 100% maintains the vintage style and my search led me to The Lucille Coat Dress by Australian designer Evelyn Wood.

I’ve been following designer and blogger Evelyn on Instagram for some time now and must have had some of her pieces saved on my Etsy watchlist for at least a year… probably more!
I was quite taken with the Lucille Coat Dress because not only did it look warm and comfortable, but the rich blue velvet was just so glamorous!

The standard style for the Lucille actually only has short sleeves but I enquired if it would be possible to have more of a 3/4 sleeve. The longer sleeve felt a little more practical to me and whilst it does make the dress look a little bit more like a actual coat, I still feel like I’ll be able to wear it as a dress and layer with a coat in colder weather.

The blue velvet has that delicious weight to it, I love that feeling of luxury when wearing a heavy fabric. It just feels so high quality (which it is!) and such a contrast to the flimsy fabrics of fast fashion.

Evelyn Wood creates authentic reproduction and this is based on a early 1950s design. It has all the things that you’d expect to see in true vintage piece- self covered button and belt, shoulder pads, invisible hand stitched hem, open seams for easy altering and of course my favourite… pockets! The only thing I would have like to have seen is for it to be lined- but that’s less essential since I’m predominantly going to be wearing it as a dress rather than a coat.

The great thing about buying from independent designers like Evelyn Wood is that everything can made to order. Yes, this can sometimes mean a bit more of a wait but it’s worth it as you can request custom measurements if you are in between sizes. I was between a small and medium so Evelyn made sure what she made fitted correctly while still fitting snug how I like it.

With the launch of the new website, there is now ready-made stock which is perfect for anyone who fits the standards sizing.

I’m wearing mine with a petticoat to enhance that skirt and give more of a ‘dress’ vibe. I also really like the look without a petticoat- it looks a little more 1940s and a touch more like a coat over a dress. I went with slightly more glam accessories for this shoot with the gold shoes and pin but I’m looking forward to accessorising it with perhaps a tan belt, shoes and gloves for a more daytime look.

With it’s lapel, self-covered buttons, deep pockets, cuffs and matching waist tie, the Lucille really satisfies my need for the little details. These things are what make me go from just liking a dress to absolutely loving it.

The Lucille Coat Dress is AU$298 for the standard ready made dress and shorter sleeve length or AU$330 for the longer sleeves and custom sizing. The standard sizing goes from XS – XXL and this style also comes in a decadent green and glorious red.

  1. Stunning dress! I have always been a fan of coat dresses. One I used to have years ago must be the dress I have worn more often than any other in my life – a slightly military styled dark green one. This velvet looks to die for!

  2. Wow, it’s absolutely beautiful! I like it with the longer sleeves. I do miss my vintage dresses in the winter as I just don’t have many warm enough ones without having to cover them up. I’d love the red coat dress! I’m loving being introduced to so many amazing vintage and vintage reproduction websites. Your blog is great, thanks
