There’s something to be said for dress that not only has style but is also incredibly comfortable to wear. That’s what the Valerie Dress by Zoe Vine is all about. It feels soft and feminine but also like I could lay on the couch all day in this dress. It’s kind of like if pajamas were in dress form, it’d be the Valerie.
The key to this comfort is the stretchy polyester fabric and floaty bishop sleeves. The fabric is smooth and silky while not being too shiny which makes it perfect for dressing up for night-time or down for a more casual look. To embrace the change of seasons, heading into Autumn here in London, I decided to go with more casual accessories for this shoot.
One of my favourite things to accessorize with at the moment is gold and tan. It has such a elegant but still understated feel to it and goes with practically any colour. I also knew I wanted to pair my beautiful Amber Meteor Jewelery Co. set with it so the tan was the best match to that too.
Featuring a lined fitted bodice, pleated skirt and big flowing sleeves with cuffs, the Valerie is one of those dresses that can easily look vintage or is great for a more contemporary loving woman who wants a touch of nostalgia. And yes, it has pockets! Perfect for the modern pinup.
The one thing I will note, is that the lining isn’t particularly thick and so you do need to be aware of what bra you are wearing as it any lines or lace may show through. Also bear in mind that this fabric is probably more suitable for steaming wrinkles out over ironing but if you haven’t switched to life with a steamer, you won’t be going back! I use a small travel one like this one from Amazon.
The skirt is full enough to fit a petticoat underneath however it does mess with the pleating effect a little bit and because of the nature of the fabric being so floaty, it looks a little bumpy. I went without a petticoat so that the shape of the skirt was fully represented and I was rather thankful since this shoot took place on a rather hot and humid London day.
No petticoat certainly does turn down the ‘vintage dial’ by a few notches!
From my experience with Zoe Vine, I tend to be a size 10 in anything with stretch or that runs big (The Isabelle Toile for instance) but a 12 for non-stretch. Since the Valerie has a significant amount of stretch and the sleeves are floaty enough for that area not to be a problem, I went with the 10. It’s the perfect fit!
For reference, I am 37″/Bust and 27″/Waist which puts me in a 14 for my bust and 10 for waist according to the size chart.
The Valerie Dress goes from sizes 8-16, is £85 and also comes in a beautiful Teal colour.
Thank you to Nicole Engelmann Photography for the beautiful photos at St Dustan-in-the-east. Built in 1100, this church was mostly destroyed during the Blitz of 1941 and the ruins are now a public garden. It made for a stunning backdrop that’s for sure!
