There’s some beauty products that everyone seems to rave on about and for me, the Kat Von D Lock-It Foundation has been on my radar for some time now.
It seemed that everyone who had tried it loved the matte, full coverage finish that it gave, along with it being a vegan product. I’ve finally had the chance to try it for myself after wanting to for well over a year!
I’ve never ordered a new foundation online, it just seems like far too much of a risk! When I was living in New Zealand, there were no stockists so ordering online was the only option but I was recently in Stockholm and stumbled across a Sephora which had some of the range.
I was happy to be able to give it a try and knew I was either going to be the #43 or #44 (I’d tried a sample of the #45 from a friend but that was a smidge too dark). The #44 was the one that ended up being the right shade for me since it has a cool undertone. I also decided to purchase the Lock-It Hydrating Primer since I felt like using the two products together was going to give me the best first impressions of the foundation.
After a few days of trying the Lock-It Foundation and Primer together, I eventually decided that I wasn’t a fan on the primer. It lives up to it’s name and is indeed moisturising but the result was that slight sticky feeling once I’d applied the foundation. I’m so used to primer’s that are high in silicone and create that silky, soft, matte feeling. I also really like my foundation to dry matte so that I can give my face a quick once over with powder to seal it all but I feel like the Primer just wasn’t working for me.
Instead I tried the foundation with my existing favourite primer, the L’Oreal Infalliable Priming Base and it made a big difference to how I felt about it. I don’t think the Lock-It Hydrating Primer is a bad product, I just feel like it’s not the best product for me and my preferences.
Onto the foundation itself, which I’m a little on the fence about. It’s a buildable formula with medium-full coverage that dries matte. I like that I can easily get full coverage on spots without having to mess around with concealer and I also appreciate that it’s a fragrance-free formula considering I have some skin sensitivities. The one thing I will say is that it does dry and set rather quickly so you’ve got to blend it reasonably fast.
Because of this, I feel like potentially this might not work for those with a tendency towards dry skin or it could be more essential to pair it with the Hydrating Primer
How well does it last? Pretty well! I do have oily skin so I get some shine coming through depending on the weather after 6+ hours and I after 8-10 hours I definitely need a quick touch up on my chin and nose but to be honest I don’t think there’s any foundation where I wouldn’t have to do that!
The Lock-It Foundation range has 33 different shades including a good amount on the dark end of the scale. I don’t think the price £27 (US$35) is hideously expensive compared to what I’m used to paying for makeup back in New Zealand but it’s certainly a substantial amount for someone on a budget. And in comparison to the £8 L’Oreal Paris Infalliable Matte Foundation I was previously using, it certainly is a big jump.
The good news is that a little goes a long way and I rarely need more than a single pump.
So, what’s the verdict? I think I was expecting a little more from a product that’s had such hype. The finish is nice, but I wouldn’t rave about it and I’m unsure if I will purchase it again.I’ve read that the formula has changed recently and seen comments about how it’s not as good as it used to be.
To be completely honest, I think my £8 L’Oreal Foundation does a better job!
I can’t give any magic tips on ordering the right shade online but there are some good websites for helping you to work it out based on your shade in other brands (findation.com was spot on with my shade for KVD) But, as always, the safest bet will be to try to visit a stockist if at all possible.
I’m interested in trying some more items from the Kat Von D Beauty range now that they are stocked at Debenhams on Oxford Street here in London or online. Perhaps I’ve give the setting powder a go next!
