One of the questions I get asked frequently, is about what I consider to be essentials to a pinup or vintage style wardrobe. Of course, easy to mix and match clothing items, a petticoat and/or accessories like a headscarf are all things that I’d recommend, but one thing that most forget about is shoes!
Shoes are a tricky one as you don’t want to spend all your money on heels that you potentially will not get a huge amount of wear out of, but in the world of vintage shoe reproduction, there simply isn’t a whole lot of choice when it comes to casual flats.
Enter Charlie Stone Shoes! This Australian brand has been around since 2014 but really taken off with some beautiful styles in the last year or two. Owner Samantha started Charlie Stone after finding a gap in the market for casual vintage style shoes that weren’t heels, ballet flats or brogues.
All of the styles are not only beautiful and stylish, but are also practical and comfortable which is often overlooked.

I was so excited to see the new Roma style was made out of a vegan faux leather! I went vegan in January 2017 and while I still own some leather items like shoes from before the switch, I want to ensure that anything new I get is not made from animal products. So it’s wonderful to have brands that can give us stylish AND cruelty free options!
The Roma comes in a Black and a Mahogany faux croc leather. The really great thing about this style is that it has a inbuilt 20mm internal heel, to just give you that little extra boost and a soft cushioned sole for comfort.
Speaking of comfort, I find these really good! I hate having tight shoes at the toe, so really appreciate the wideness of these shoes. In the last few weeks, I have worn them several times and while they do start off a little stiff and I had some rubbing on the back of my heel in the first wear, this certainly eased off.
If you want to speed up the ‘wearing-in’ process then you can give it a helping hand by gently heating it up with a blowdryer and flexing the material to soften it.

The Roma is perfect for anyone with a wide foot and this style does run on the larger side. I wear my usual size (EU39) which fits perfectly, so the advice is to only size down if you are usually a half size. The great thing about Charlie Stone is that if you do order the wrong size, they will send your exchange free of charge!
The style of this shoe is super versatile – and to show that, I decided to wear the Black Roma with a more 50s style outfit and the Mahogany with 40s style. These really are the perfect day to day shoe!
The Roma by Charlie Stone Shoes is $159 AUD and comes in sizes 35 – 42. Australians get free shipping as do International orders if they are over $200.
Which is your favourite? Classic black or versatile mahogany?
